How to Clean an Ipe Deck: A Step-by-Step Guide

Cleaning an Ipe deck is one of those jobs that sounds complicated and turns out to take about an hour. Ipe is naturally resistant to mold and mildew, so you’re mostly dealing with surface dirt, pollen, tree sap, and the occasional tannin bleed. Here’s the complete process.

How Often Should You Clean an Ipe Deck?

For most homeowners, a thorough cleaning once a year — usually in spring — is sufficient. If your deck is under heavy tree cover or in a humid climate, you may want to do a light rinse in fall to remove leaves before winter. A well-installed Ipe deck doesn’t trap moisture and dries quickly, which limits mold and algae growth significantly.

What You’ll Need

  • Garden hose or low-pressure washer (500–600 PSI max)
  • Soft-bristle deck brush
  • Tropical hardwood deck cleaner (oxygen-based, not bleach)
  • Bucket
  • Optional: oxalic acid deck brightener (for restoring color on weathered Ipe)

Step-by-Step: How to Clean an Ipe Deck

Step 1 — Clear the deck

Remove all furniture, planters, and rugs. Sweep off loose debris with a broom. Pay attention to the gaps between boards — debris that compacts in the gaps can trap moisture over time.

Step 2 — Wet the surface

Rinse the deck thoroughly with a garden hose to wet the wood before applying any cleaner. This prevents the cleaning solution from absorbing too quickly into the dry wood.

Step 3 — Apply deck cleaner

Mix your tropical hardwood cleaner according to the product directions. Apply it to the wet deck surface with a brush or garden sprayer. Work in sections of about 8–10 boards at a time. Let it dwell for 5–10 minutes — don’t let it dry on the surface.

For stubborn mildew or green algae, use a stiff-bristle brush and scrub along the grain. For general cleaning, a softer brush is fine and won’t raise the grain.

Step 4 — Rinse thoroughly

Rinse each section completely before moving to the next. Residual cleaner left on the wood can leave a dull film. Rinse until the water runs clear.

Step 5 — Let it dry fully

Allow the deck to dry for at least 48 hours before applying any oil or sealant. Ipe is dense and takes longer to dry than softer woods — oiling too soon traps moisture and prevents the oil from penetrating properly.

Step 6 (Optional) — Brighten if needed

If your Ipe has weathered to silver and you want to restore the brown tone before oiling, apply an oxalic acid-based deck brightener after cleaning. This neutralizes tannins and opens the wood grain for better oil penetration. Rinse off, let dry, then oil.

What to Avoid When Cleaning Ipe

Bleach-based cleaners: Bleach strips the natural oils from Ipe wood and causes uneven color. It will also corrode any metal hardware on your deck. Use oxygen-based cleaners specifically formulated for hardwoods.

High-pressure washing: A power washer above 600 PSI will raise the grain on Ipe, leaving a rough texture that wasn’t there before. A standard garden hose has enough pressure for rinsing. If you use a pressure washer, use the lowest setting with a wide fan tip.

Steel wool or metal scrub pads: Steel particles left behind will rust and leave stains. Use synthetic or natural-fiber brushes only.

Dealing with Specific Stains

Tannin bleed: New Ipe sometimes releases tannins in the first year, especially in rain. These show up as dark streaks on concrete or pavers below the deck. On the deck surface itself, tannin bleed is usually removed with a simple cleaning. The effect diminishes after the first season.

Tree sap: Let it harden, then carefully scrape with a plastic scraper. Follow with a mineral spirits wipe on that area.

Rust stains from furniture: Oxalic acid (used in deck brighteners) is effective at removing rust stains from wood surfaces.

Oil stains (cooking, sunscreen): Apply a small amount of mineral spirits with a cloth and rub along the grain. For larger stains, a degreasing deck cleaner works well.

After Cleaning: Should You Oil?

Cleaning is a good opportunity to assess whether your deck needs oiling. If water still beads up on the surface, the natural oils are intact and you can skip oiling this season. If water absorbs quickly and the wood looks dry, it’s a good time to apply a coat of penetrating hardwood oil.

The most important thing: Ipe is extremely forgiving. Even if cleaning is the only maintenance your deck ever gets, the wood will still outlast most other decking materials on the market.
