Our Story

Built on generations of expertise. Delivered to your door.

Buy Ipe Direct was established in 2015 — not as a startup, but as the direct-to-customer evolution of a mill and importer whose roots run generations deep. Long before we had a website or a national footprint, the people behind this company were already in the forests, at the docks, and inside the mills — sourcing, grading, and moving some of the world’s most demanding hardwoods.

Where we come from

Our foundation was laid long before 2015. For generations, our parent mill and import operation built its reputation the slow way — through rigorous sourcing, uncompromising grading standards, and relationships with suppliers that took decades to earn. Ipe, the ironwood of South America, was never a product we stumbled into. It was the center of our craft.

That generational knowledge — knowing which regions produce the densest stock, which mills hold to NHLA and IWPA standards, how air-dried Ipe behaves on a rooftop deck versus a coastal boardwalk — is not something you can acquire quickly. It accumulates over lifetimes.

“We didn’t build Buy Ipe Direct to sell wood. We built it to give every contractor, architect, and homeowner in America direct access to the same material and expertise that major developers have relied on for decades.”

Building national distribution

In 2015, we recognized that the premium hardwood market was fragmented. Contractors in Utah were paying a premium over contractors in Maryland — not because the wood was different, but because distribution was broken. Regional dealers, middlemen, and inconsistent sourcing meant that quality and price varied wildly depending on your zip code.

So we built something different. Leveraging our existing mill relationships and import infrastructure, we established direct shipping lanes across the continental United States — making it possible to source genuine premium Ipe at consistent pricing regardless of where you’re building.

That network is what became Buy Ipe Direct. Not a brand built for marketing — a distribution system built for builders.

How we got here

Generations ago

Mill and import operation founded. Expertise in tropical hardwood sourcing developed over decades.

2015

Buy Ipe Direct established. National direct-to-customer distribution launched for the first time.

Today

Nationwide shipping. World-class projects. The same standards — now available to everyone.

What hasn’t changed

The distribution model is new. The sourcing standards are not. Every board that ships under the Buy Ipe Direct name is held to the same grading criteria that our mill operation established long before e-commerce existed. Our team — some of the most experienced people in tropical hardwoods — personally vets the stock before it moves.

We carry Ipe, Cumaru, Tigerwood, Garapa, Massaranduba, and Red Balau — not because they’re trendy, but because we know them. We know how they age, how they install, how they perform in desert heat and coastal humidity alike. That’s knowledge that doesn’t come from a catalog.

Why Direct Sourcing Matters

Most hardwood lumber passes through 2–3 layers of distribution before reaching a contractor — a Brazilian mill ships to a US importer, the importer sells to a regional distributor, the distributor sells to a lumber yard, and the lumber yard sells to you. Each step adds margin.

We cut that chain. We import directly and ship straight to your jobsite. That means you get the same quality wood that luxury projects use, without the retail markup.

What We Carry

🌲 Ipe (Brazilian Walnut)

The gold standard for outdoor decking. 3,684 Janka hardness, Class A fire rated, 75+ year outdoor lifespan. Used on boardwalks, rooftop terraces, luxury residential decks, and commercial installations worldwide.

🌿 Garapa (Brazilian Ash)

A premium golden-blonde hardwood with 1,686 Janka hardness and a 25–40 year outdoor lifespan. Naturally resistant to rot and insects without chemical treatment — real hardwood durability at a more accessible price point.

Our Commitment

All lumber we source is legally harvested from managed forests in Brazil. We work only with mills that operate within Brazilian federal regulations governing timber harvesting.
