Professional Ipe Deck Installation Services

Looking for experienced Ipe wood installers? Buy Ipe Direct connects you with skilled contractors who specialize in hardwood deck installation across the East Coast and beyond. Whether you’re building a new Ipe deck, replacing an existing structure, or adding Ipe siding or fencing, we can help you find the right installer for your project.

Why Ipe Requires Specialized Installation

Ipe is one of the hardest and densest woods in the world, with a Janka hardness rating of 3,684 lbf. This exceptional durability is what makes it last 75+ years — but it also means standard deck-building techniques won’t work. Ipe installation requires:

  • Pre-drilling every fastener hole — Ipe is too dense for screws to be driven without pilot holes. Skipping this step will split the wood or break drill bits.
  • Specialized drill bits and fasteners — Standard wood screws won’t penetrate Ipe. Stainless steel screws rated for hardwood are essential to prevent corrosion and ensure holding power.
  • Proper gapping and ventilation — Ipe expands and contracts with moisture changes. Boards must be spaced correctly (typically 3/16″ to 1/4″) and the substructure must allow airflow underneath.
  • Hidden fastener systems — Many Ipe decks use concealed clip systems for a clean, screw-free surface. These require precise routing or pre-grooved boards.
  • Carbide-tipped saw blades — Standard blades dull quickly on Ipe. Carbide-tipped blades designed for hardwood are required for clean cuts.

What to Expect: The Installation Process

1. Material Selection and Order

Start by choosing your Ipe products from our price sheet. We carry Ipe decking in multiple profiles including eased edge, pre-grooved, and tongue-and-groove. Our team can help you calculate the board footage needed for your project.

2. Delivery to Your Jobsite

We ship Ipe lumber direct to your jobsite anywhere in the continental US via LTL freight. Material typically arrives within 5–10 business days of order placement, depending on your location and stock availability.

3. Acclimation

Once delivered, Ipe should acclimate at the jobsite for 3–5 days before installation. Store boards flat, off the ground, in a covered area with good airflow. This allows the wood to adjust to local humidity conditions.

4. Installation

A typical residential Ipe deck installation takes 3–7 days depending on size and complexity. This includes substructure preparation, board layout, fastening, and finishing details like railing and stair integration.

5. Optional Finishing

Ipe can be left natural to weather to an elegant silver-gray patina, or treated with a penetrating oil finish to maintain its rich brown color. Our installers can apply an initial coat of oil at the time of installation if desired.

Installation Cost Estimates

Installation costs for Ipe decking vary by region, project complexity, and access conditions. As a general guide:

  • Basic deck installation: $8–$15 per square foot (labor only, excluding materials)
  • Complex projects (multi-level, curves, built-in seating): $15–$25 per square foot
  • Siding installation: $6–$12 per square foot
  • Railing and stairs: Quoted per linear foot, typically $30–$60/lf installed

These are approximate ranges. Request a quote from our installation partners for accurate project pricing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I install Ipe decking myself?

Yes — experienced DIYers with the right tools can install Ipe. You’ll need a high-quality drill, carbide-tipped saw blade, stainless steel screws or a hidden fastener system, and patience with pre-drilling. See our complete installation guide for step-by-step instructions.

How long does an Ipe deck last?

A properly installed Ipe deck lasts 50–75+ years. Learn more about Ipe wood and why it’s the most durable decking material available.

Do I need to oil my Ipe deck?

Oiling is optional. It preserves the warm brown color but is not required for structural integrity. Read our Ipe maintenance guide for detailed care instructions.

What substructure do I need for Ipe?

Ipe decking can be installed on pressure-treated lumber, steel, or Ipe joists. The substructure must be level, properly spaced (16″ on center for 1″ boards, 24″ for 5/4″), and allow airflow beneath the deck surface.
