Ipe Wood Maintenance Guide: How to Care for Your Ipe Deck

One of the most common questions we hear from customers is simple: do I actually have to do anything to my Ipe deck? The honest answer is no — Ipe will outlast most alternatives even with zero maintenance. But with a small amount of annual care, it stays beautiful for decades instead of slowly weathering to gray.

This guide covers everything you need to know about maintaining an Ipe wood deck, from the first season through year ten and beyond.

Why Ipe Requires So Little Maintenance

Ipe wood (also called Brazilian Walnut) is one of the densest hardwoods in the world, with a Janka hardness rating of 3,684 lbf. That density is what makes it naturally resistant to rot, insects, mold, and moisture without any chemical treatment. Unlike pressure-treated pine or composite decking, Ipe doesn’t rely on chemical preservatives that degrade over time.

The wood also contains natural oils that act as a built-in preservative. These oils are part of why an Ipe deck can last 75+ years — longer than the houses they’re attached to in many cases.

Year One: What to Expect Out of the Box

Fresh Ipe arrives with a warm, chocolate-brown color. In the first few months, especially with sun exposure, the surface will begin to lighten and develop a silvery patina. This is completely normal — it’s not damage, discoloration, or failure of any kind.

Whether you want to preserve the original brown color or let it weather to silver is entirely a matter of personal preference. Both choices are permanent and low-maintenance. Most homeowners who want to preserve the brown tone start oiling in the first season.

The Only Decision: Oil or Let It Go Natural

Option 1 — Natural weathering (no maintenance required): Leave the deck untreated. The wood gradually turns a uniform silver-gray over 6–12 months. This look is popular for modern and coastal architecture. Structurally, the wood is identical — the silver color is purely cosmetic oxidation of the surface.

Option 2 — Annual oiling (preserves the brown tone): Apply a penetrating hardwood deck oil once a year, typically in spring. This replenishes the surface oils, slows the weathering process, and keeps the warm brown color. Use an oil specifically formulated for dense tropical hardwoods — products like Penofin Hardwood or Ipe Oil work well. Avoid film-forming finishes like deck stains or varnish, which will peel on dense hardwood.

Annual Ipe Deck Maintenance Checklist

If you choose to maintain your Ipe deck, this is the full year’s work:

  • Spring cleaning: Sweep off debris and rinse with a garden hose. For mold or mildew buildup, use a deck cleaner designed for tropical hardwoods and a soft brush. Avoid power washing at high pressure — it can raise the grain.
  • Inspection: Check fasteners for corrosion (use stainless steel or hidden fasteners for Ipe). Look for any boards that have cupped or twisted — rare with Ipe, but worth noting.
  • Oiling (if desired): After cleaning, let the deck dry fully (48 hours minimum). Apply hardwood deck oil with a brush or roller according to the product directions. One coat is usually sufficient. Wipe off any excess to avoid a surface buildup.
  • Fall: Clear leaves before winter. Wet leaves sitting on the deck for months can create surface staining.

What You Should Never Do

  • Don’t use film-forming finishes: Paint, solid stain, or spar varnish will peel and flake on dense Ipe. Penetrating oils only.
  • Don’t power wash on high pressure: A low-pressure rinse is fine. High-pressure washing raises the grain and can damage the surface unnecessarily.
  • Don’t use bleach-based cleaners: Bleach can strip the wood’s natural oils and lighten the color unevenly.
  • Don’t ignore hardware: The Ipe itself will outlast the fasteners. Use stainless steel screws and hardware from the start.

Restoring a Weathered Ipe Deck

If your Ipe has been allowed to go silver and you want to restore the original brown tone, it can be done. Clean the deck with an oxalic acid-based deck brightener, let it dry, then apply hardwood oil. The brown color will largely return, though very old weathered decks may need more than one treatment to fully restore.

The Bottom Line on Ipe Maintenance

Ipe wood maintenance is genuinely optional. The deck will last decades with or without it. If you want to preserve the original color, budget about half a day per year for cleaning and oiling. That’s the full commitment for one of the most beautiful and durable decking materials available.
